Wheat Under Supplementary Irrigation13 October 2021

By Hannelie Tait, Pannar Representative, Hoopstad, 083 967 7858

Here, AJ Calitz and Dr Andre du Toit are at a beautiful planting of PAN 3541 under supplementary irrigation in the Hoopstad area. AJ has a limited amount of 300mm water available for his wheat planting. He can irrigate 25mm at a time. In collaboration with Andre, Pannar's wheat breeder, the following strategy was decided on: AJ aims for 6 t/ha and therefore planted PAN 3541 at 60kg and 70kg seed per ha. The photo shows how well PAN 3541 tillers at a lower plant population. AJ's irrigation strategy was then as follows, in an attempt to get the best results with the limited amount of water available:

  1. Start with a wet profile
  2. Apply 25 – 30mm when the wheat starts tillering
  3. Apply 25 – 30mm just before flag leaf in the boot stage
  4. Apply 25 – 30mm then just before the wheat starts flowering, and
  5. Apply 25 – 30mm 3 weeks after the heads or ears appeared

PAN 3541 is a medium growing season spring type cultivar, intended as Pannar's flagship under irrigation. If Pannar's spring type wheat cultivars are planted early, they can be planted at a lower seeding rate. The cultivars tiller (stool) very well. This reduces the seed cost and risk if an unexpected cold period is experienced. If the planting time is moved to the second half of the recommended planting window, up to 100 kg of seed per hectare is recommended.
