Ben Dunhin (right) Pannar’s representative in Lichtenburg with Wessel Wessels (farmer and Pannar trial co-operator) when they planted the first trial of the season in the North West. This is a continuation of the plant population trial conducted at Wessel’s last year from which Ben has already obtained valuable information. Last year’s trial was done under semi-irrigation. Several hybrids were tested at plant populations ranging from 30 000, to 40 000, 50 000 and 60 000 plants per hectare. PAN 5R-891BR yielded 14,9 tons at a population of 32 000 plants/ha. Wessel's irrigation scheduling is carefully planned through the different growth stages of the hybrid. Wessel believes that profit per hectare is more important than yield per hectare.
There are several factors to consider when selecting the most suitable plant population for maize. Genetic differences between hybrids such as multi-cobbing versus single-cobbing (prolificacy), the growing season length and standability of a hybrid are very important.
