Pannar's irrigated wheat package is simply impressive. This planting of PAN 3541 by Stoffel Boshoff near Vredefort, produced an impressive 10 t/ha yield. Stoffel planted it at 70 kg/ha and fertilised it with 200 kg N/ha, 40 kg P/ha and 38 kg K/ha. Nelia Louw, Pannar's representative for this area in the Northern Free State, is very impressed with this good yield.
Pannar recommends its spring type wheat cultivars at a reduced planting density of 60kg seed per hectare at early planting dates under irrigation to utilise the maximum potential of the cultivars. Through reduced planting density and good management, the stooling potential of each cultivar can be used to achieve excellent yields and save costs. In combination with a good seedbed, 120 to 170 plants per square meter should develop, at a germination percentage of 90%. The reduced plant population favours a cultivar's ability to form tillers and offers several benefits to the grower. However, the seeding rate must be increased when planting later in the recommended planting window to 90kg of seed per hectare (210 plants per square meter) to compensate for the loss of tillers due to the shorter available growing season.
