With good weather and soil moisture conditions, the first P3 soybean trial at Hoopstad is in the ground. Hannelie Tait, Pannar's representative in Hoopstad, says conditions look very promising. Here, Jan Coetzee, who farms near Hoopstad, is checking the placement of the seed. The soybeans were planted in 0.76m rows at a plant population of 280,000. Pannar's team plants a series of P3 trials annually to test and identify the very best cultivars, as well as promising cultivars in Pannar's pipeline. P3 stands for "Pannar Preferred Products" and gives us the opportunity to make unbiased performance comparisons that enable us to make accurate cultivar recommendations to farmers.
The past few seasons have seen great success with soybeans in the western production areas. Soybeans are ideal in a crop rotation system, and Pannar's soybean package is versatile and should give you the best chance for success. Over the long term, it was found that growth classes 5 and 6 produce the most stable yield, and the largest part of a soybean package should be composed of these growth classes. The cultivars for the western parts, in order of popularity, are PAN 1644R, PAN 1521R, PAN 1555R and PAN 1588R.
Pannar has a comprehensive soybean cultivar range and a few new cultivars available for the 2022 planting season:
Early maturity cultivars
PAN 1479R (Relative Maturity; MG 4.6) is a niche product that is suitable for late plantings or where a quick cultivar is required to stretch the harvesting period in the temperate production regions over a longer time. PAN 1532R (MG 5.3) is a stable performer with an upright plant type that is well adapted to high plant populations and narrow rows. Pannar has small volumes of two new varieties to compete in this segment. PAN 1502R (MG 5.2) and PAN 1507 (MG 5.5) will complement the long-standing PAN 1532R (MG 5.3) in this early maturity category.
Medium maturity cultivars
This segment of the market is very well served by two very well-established varieties, PAN 1521R (MG 5.7) and PAN 1555R (MG 5.9). PAN 1555R is the cultivar of choice for the more difficult soil types and climate conditions. The recent addition of PAN 1588R (MG 5.9) to this formidable group adds depth and breadth to the medium maturity group. The vigorous growth habit of PAN 1588R extends its area of adaptation deep into the western production regions as well, despite its maturity. The latest addition to the medium maturity group is PAN 1586R (MG 5.9), which will support the group in the eastern production area.
Late maturity cultivars
This group is very capably represented by PAN 1644R (MG 6.7), that has absolutely ‘shot the lights out’ everywhere it has been grown.
