This week we had the pleasure of hosting Ignacio Ardanaz from Rizobacter, to share more about Elite Soybean Inoculant. A lively discussion ensued around the following topics:
Can biological nitrogen fixation provide for the nitrogen required by the crop?
Yes, if the nodular system is properly developed, BNF can supply enough N for soybeans. Rhizobia can supply up to 80% of nitrogen requirements of the crop. The rest comes from the soil.
Does it help to apply nitrogen when planting, to boost the crop?
No, a high amount of nitrogen in early growth stages will inhibit biological nitrogen fixation. The crops might look good at beginning of the cycle, but will show shortage of nitrogen on reproductive stages.
Does a dry planting affect nodulation?
Yes, bacteria may die due to dehydration and high temperature decreasing the chances of obtaining an optimum nodulation.
Do fugicides, inseciticides or fertilisers applied on the seed affect nodulation?
Some active ingredients might affect bacteria, but certainly solvents and excipients do. A compatibility test would be important.
