A special blood donor clinic was held at Pannar Seed on Monday, 26 June in honour of Liekie Steyn, who continues her brave battle against acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).
Thirty eight (38) units of blood were collected from the 50 people who donated – no small feat in cold and flu season. Another clinic was simultaneously hosted in the Greytown Town Hall, where a further 35 units were donated bringing the total for Greytown to 73 units. No small feat for such a small community, but again proving how closely people care for each other when the need is high.
This heartfelt and generous donation will go some way towards assisting patients like Liekie, who during her second admission for high dose chemotherapy, has already received 20 units of blood and 33 units of blood platelets. One can only imagine the enormity of the need for blood in South Africa when we take this into account with other cancer and surgical patients, as well as accident victims, children with severe anaemia and women haemorrhaging due to pregnancy and gynaecological complications. After the drive Liekie wrote: “Thanks to everyone who donated today, I really appreciate it. Let us make it a regular thing. Lots of people benefit from your donation. Thanks again.”
Thank you to each and every person who has supported this initiative. We urge everybody to continue supporting these clinics – remember blood is a gift that money cannot buy nor science can create.
