A blood drive was held at PANNAR SEED on Wednesday, 13 September in celebration of Sunflower Day 2017. A total of 37 units of blood were collected from the 42 people who presented to donate.
Every attendee received a TOPE (Tube of Hope) in commemoration of Sunflower Day which takes place on Friday, 15 September as a day to raise awareness and funds for the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR). For those who missed out on a TOPE at the clinic, they can be purchased for R25 from Pick n Pay or online at Zando - all monies raised go to recruiting blood stem cell donors. Last year the SABMR sold over 155 000 TOPES and recruited 1 488 new donors onto the registry, their target is 200 000 target this year.
A heartfelt thank you to each and every kind and compassionate person who supported this initiative. Your donation will go a long way towards giving patients like Liekie Steyn and others suffering from blood-related diseases as well as accident victims and mothers in labour the opportunity to live healthy lives. This Sunflower Day we would also like to spare a thought for all Greytonians affected by cancer, including people living with cancer, cancer survivors, carers, family members and friends – none of us want to be on this journey, but we are and so we fight side by side helping each other with love, information and support.
We’d like to already appeal to the everyone to support the next drive ahead of the festive season when the demand for blood is tragically high - a time of year when we all celebrate family and the gift of life.
