Soybean rust was detected in Greytown for the first time this season, on 6 March. Sporulating rust pustules have been found on the early planted soybeans (1 November), but not yet on the later plantings. If soybean rust inoculum is present in an area, the oldest crop will be the first to show symptoms and it is normally a good indicator that the rest of the plantings will follow shortly. Soybean rust is best controlled by spraying preventatively before pustules are visible. The first rust symptoms of the season have appeared 3 weeks later than the norm established over the last 17 years at Greytown, owing to the dry midseason conditions. Most soybean crops will have at least a month of active growth left, and at this stage, if you are in an area that is prone to rust it would be worthwhile considering a fungicide application if you have not already.
